Mets Sign Bruce Maxwell

Jul 29, 2020 8:56 AM

The New York Mets have agreed to a contract with Bruce Maxwell, according to reports.

The catcher's deal is pending a physical and coronavirus intake testing.

Maxwell hasn't played in the majors since 2018 with the Oakland Athletics. He was the first Major League player to kneel during the national anthem to protest social injustice; that was in 2017.

New Deal Will See Dodgers Pay Mookie Betts Through 2044

Jul 24, 2020 9:14 AM

Mookie Betts won't receive all of his money from the Los Angeles Dodgers until he's nearly 52 in 2044, according to a report.

Betts reached an agreement on a 12-year, $365 million deal with the Dodgers earlier this week.

The deal carries a $65 million signing bonus that is guaranteed against work stoppages and shortened seasons, but the Dodgers don't have to begin paying the bonus for more than a year.

His deal includes $115 million in deferred payments. If he is traded, though, the deferrals would be eliminated and the money would be due in each season the contract covers. He does not have a no-trade provision.

The massive deal calls for $8 million to be deferred each year from 2021-25, $10 million in both 2026 and 2027, and $11 million in each of the last five seasons, The money is payable each July 1 from 2033-44: $8 million for the first five payments, $10 million for the next two and $11 million for the final five.

Mookie Betts, Dodgers Nearing 13-Year, $380M Extension

Jul 24, 2020 9:16 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers are close to an agreement on a massive contract extension with Mookie Betts worth more than $380 million over 13 seasons, according to sources.

Los Angeles acquired Betts in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox this offseason.

Betts was expected to receive a deal worth at least $300 million before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Betts capped his championship-winning 2018 season with an MVP award and followed it last year by hitting .295/.391/.524.

Betts' deal is the second-biggest by total value in MLB history.

J.T. Realmuto 'Not Too Worried' About Next Contract

Jul 10, 2020 8:48 AM

J.T. Realmuto isn't focusing on his next contract.

Realmuto and the Philadelphia Phillies had preliminary discussions about a long-term deal before the coronavirus pandemic, but talks between the two sides haven't progressed since last week.

The catcher is eligible for free agency after the season unless the Phillies sign him to a long-term deal.

He's expected to seek at least $20 million per season.

"It definitely concerns me, not necessarily for myself, but for the free-agency class as a whole," Realmuto said. "The top guys usually find a way to get their dollars. Teams are going to want them. Maybe it's not 20 teams in on you -- maybe five or 10. A lot of teams will be able to look at this as a time to take advantage and actually go for it instead of backing off, because half the league will try to cut revenue and save money and the others will look at it as an advantage to press forward. It could affect free agency as a whole, but for myself, I'm not too worried."

Mookie Betts Doesn't Regret Turning Down $300M From Red Sox

Jul 10, 2020 8:58 AM

Mookie Betts is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason following a 60-game slate amid a tumultuous year full of labor strife and fears over the coronavirus pandemic.

Major League payrolls are expected to fall in the wake of COVID-19, but Betts says he doesn't regret turning down a 10-year, $300 million extension offer from the Boston Red Sox last offseason.

The Red Sox dealt Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this year.

"I don't regret turning down that," Betts said. "Once I make a decision, I make a decision. I'm not going back and questioning myself. I don't worry about that. The market will be what the market is. We'll just cross that bridge when we get there. But for right now, it's just the safety and health that I'm worried about."
